How To Tie Shane Stalcup's Gilled Nymph
Stalcup's Gilled Nymph
Recipe: Hook: TMC 200R 12-16 Thread: Uni-thread 6/0 Tan Tial: Ostrich herl tips / Sand Boby: Ostrich Herl / Sand Underbody: Superfine Dubbing / color to match body Ribbing: Fine gold wire Shellback: Medallion Sheeting Thorax: Hare's ear, squirrel or opossum dubbing Legs: Partridge
Step 1.
Start the thread and cut the tag off. You can't see this step, but tie in some wire and wrap to the bend.
Step 2.
You'll need three strands of ostrich herl and you will want to tie them in at the tips (make sure the tips aren't broken). Measure the tail half the body length. Make two turns to secure them in. That's all the wraps we want right now.
Step 3.
Dub a small underbody of superfine dubbing. If you have a material clip now would be a good time to put the herl in it to get it out of the way when you go to dub the body.
Step 4.
Twist the three herls together. By twisting the ostrich you will notice the hair want's to flare out more instead of laying down. Wrap them up meeting the dubbing. Trim the excess off.
Step 5.
Wrap the ribbing forward, tie it off, and trim the excess. If you tied down any of the hair sticking up you can always go back and pick it out with a bodkin.
Step 6.
Now tie in the medallion sheeting. This will be your wing case. Tie it in to where it molds around the hook shank.
Step 7.
I'm using squirrel dubbing to do this step. Theses dubbing are the best because of the guard hairs. When dubbing the thorax make sure you leave a little room for the partridge. Just make the thorax a little bigger than the body.
Step 8.
Prep the feather just like you see this one.You want the feather to be the shape of a "V" so trim off the center portion.
Step 9.
Measure the length of your legs. Come in and pinch it around the shank with your thumb and index finger. Tie it down with several turns of thread. Trim the excess off.
Step 10.
Now come in with your finger nail and push down seperating the two sides. Fold the wing case over and tie it down.
Step 11.
Trim off the excess sheeting and make a nice thread head. Whip finish the fly and you can fine tune it to the way you like it. Turn the fly upside down and trim it flat. Also make sure the legs are flared out.
