How To Tie DW
The "DW" as tied by Michael Kyle
Recipe: Hook: TMC 300, size 4 Thread: GSP 50, Black Eyes: Spirit River Cross Eyed Cone Weight: 0.15 Tail: Rabbit, Charcoal Gray Body: Special Blend, Charcoal Legs: Sili Legs Hackle: Schallpen, olive
Step 1.
Slide the cone on. You can attach the eyes or wait till the end.
Step 2.
Wrap 10-12 wraps of lead wire. Snug it up against the bead. I like to use one size smaller then the rule of thumb, which is the lead should match the diameter of the hook shank. So in the case, I’m using 0.10 instead of 0.15 or 0.20. This way it won’t take up so much room(crowd) when you complete the fly.
Step 3.
Tie in the hide side down to make a tail. Usually I measure the tail to be about one in a half length of the hook shank. You can wet the rabbit to keep the hair back when you split I to tie it down.
Step 4
After you’ve tied it down and wrap a few turns in front of the hide, go ahead and cut the excess.
Step 5.
Your thread should be back when making the dubbing loop.
Step 6.
Once you’ve spun the loop and the hair is tight in the loop, go ahead and palmer it up right behind the cone. Don’t create build up with dubbing though, or you won’t have room for the sili legs and hackle to be palmered.
Step 7.
Now grab one sili leg and wrap it around the thread, then tie it down with a few wraps. By wrapping it you will have two legs on each side. If you don’t know this step just tie two on each side however you want.
Step 8.
Tie one schlappen hackle.
Step 9.
Make about four wraps in the same spot, this should be snug up against the cone. Trim the excess and add some glue up underneath the cone as well. This should add some more durability to the fly.
